Shawn has been Petaluma's trusted lice removal specialist since 2014, using a gentle, non-toxic, essential oil-based method that lice have never built resistance to, unlike the harsh chemical treatments found at the drugstore. Her calm, patient approach puts anxious parents at ease and wins over even the wriggliest little ones, turning what can feel like a stressful ordeal into a reassuring, judgment-free experience. She genuinely loves working with families, and it shows.

LICE INFORMATION

  • Lice cannot jump or fly

  • The female louse can lay up to 10 eggs per day

  • Generally, eggs hatch within 7-10 days

  • Hatched nymphs (newly hatched lice) take another 14 days to adulthood and start reproducing

  • Once hatched, the life expectancy of a louse is 30 days

  • Head lice require human blood to survive and can live only 24-48 hours off the scalp

  • Lice lay eggs only on the scalp and do not infest the home

COMMON QUESTIONS

  • The most common signs are persistent head scratching, small red bumps on the scalp, neck, or behind the ears, and tiny whitish or tan eggs (nits) attached firmly to hair shafts close to the scalp. Unlike dandruff, nits do not flake off easily. If you are unsure, a professional head check is the fastest way to know for certain.

  • We use only non-toxic, essential oil-based products with no harsh chemicals or pesticides. Our approach is safe for children ages two and older, and gentle enough for kids with sensitive skin. We do not treat children under the age of two.

  • Many over-the-counter treatments rely on pesticides that lice have developed resistance to over the years, meaning they often fail to fully eliminate an infestation. Our method combines natural essential oils with thorough manual removal of every louse and nit, an approach lice have not built resistance to and one that delivers reliable results in a single appointment.

  • Most treatments take between one and three hours, depending on hair length, thickness, texture, and the severity of the infestation. A simple head check usually takes about fifteen to thirty minutes.

  • Lice cannot survive off the human scalp for more than 24 to 48 hours, and they do not infest homes. Washing recently used bedding, hats, and hair accessories in hot water is more than enough. There is no need for expensive sprays, bombs, or throwing anything away.

  • Yes. Most children can return to school the very next day. We are happy to provide documentation confirming treatment if your school requires it.

  • Absolutely. Lice do not discriminate by age, and it is common for multiple family members to need treatment once lice are found in a household. We welcome clients of all ages (two and older) and can check the whole family in one visit.

  • Lice eggs hatch within 7 to 10 days, so a recheck during that window is essential to catch any newly hatched lice before they can reproduce. This step is what ensures the infestation is fully resolved and does not return.
